Love isn't just something God does, but is His very essence, nature, and defining characteristic.
The word "love" is often used incorrectly, causing its true meaning to become obscured. Love is often described as a feeling, an attraction, or something that makes us feel good, and sometimes used as an excuse to do wrong things. However, love, according to God, is far more deeper and more intentional than emotions.
For us to truly understand love, we must first look to its source and the perfect example of love. Love comes from God, and it's impossible for us to love if we don't accept the perfect example. The Bible makes it super clear to us that God is love. This means love is not defined or affected by culture, trends, or personal opinions, but by Godβs very own nature and character.
Godβs love is not conditional; the Bible tells us that. He does not love us because of what we must have done, what we have, or who we are becoming. He loves us because it is His very nature to love. That is why His love is consistent, faithful, and unchanging. It's not affected by how good or bad our past was. You may have done some questionable things, but even at that, He still loves you very much. You need to understand that His love towards you will never change.
Biblical love is patient, kind, selfless, and enduring. Love is the fruit of the Spirit (But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23). It does not seek its own benefit or keep records of wrongs. Love is not driven by selfish desire or temporary emotions; it is rooted in truth and sacrifice.
If our definition of love allows hatred, bitterness, pride, or selfishness to thrive, then it is not the love God speaks of.
Many people struggle in relationships and life, not because they cannot love or they do not want to love, but because they do not truly know what love is; the idea of love they have is from the world, and it makes them live in confusion. The love the world teaches is selfish, demanding, and easily broken.
But love from Godβs perspective is stable, pure, and life-giving. Knowing what love is protects us from settling for counterfeits and helps us recognize love that is genuine.
The clearest picture of love is Jesus Christ. The cross answers the question, βWhat is love?β Love is laying down your life for others. Love is choosing obedience to God over personal comfort.
Christ didnβt just talk about love β He demonstrated it.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me true love through Your Word and through Jesus Christ. Help me to fully understand love as You define it, not as the world defines it. Help me remove every false idea of love from my heart and teach me to know love. I want Your love to shape my understanding, my relationships, and my life. In Jesusβ name, Amen.
